It was just easier to imagine what we would deal with now at 13 then what we dealt with in the ’90s at 13. So, it was an automatic leapfrog into the future. “In order for us to talk about sexuality, in that age group, it really is fictionalizing because we weren’t exploring our sexuality at 12. They wanted us to talk about sexuality,” said Tegan. “I think one of the big things is it would free us to explore some of the topics our publisher wanted us to. Tegan and Sara are seen here on the red carpet for a screening of the Freevee TV series High School in Calgary in September 2022. “I cried when I saw her drawings of young Tegan and Sara,” added Sara. “We chose Tillie Walden because she is this incredible, iconic comic book artist and is queer and a twin,” said Tegan. Once High School was sent out into the world, they teamed up with award-winning illustrator Tillie Walden for Junior High. The pair, now 42, inked the deal for Junior High at the same time as High School. “It hasn’t been, ‘Oh God, we gotta go back and be traumatized.’ For us, there is a lot of really positive stuff that comes out of it,” Tegan added during a recent video chat. But I think high school and junior high was so significant for us because it was when we established our queerness. “We understand why people wouldn’t want to, don’t want to, and don’t look back. There have been so many positives that have come from it,” said Tegan about returning to the often-fraught world of adolescence.
